New Year, New trials

So it's been awhile since I posted.  All summer we continued with a very relaxed unschooling with focusing on time, money and other life skills.

Today was our first day "back to school" if you want to call it that when we never really stopped schooling the way we planned it.

We started the day with a grocery list- he wrote what I told him (I spelled most of it for him) while I was cooking dinner.

Today was different as we made a new schedule for the new year that includes school "time" and reading time and physical activity.    Eli being differently wired does better with schedules he gets to pick and control- so hopefully we'll do well with this since he got to make it.

His schedule involves a spreadsheet with time blocks and he set alarms on his "phone" (it's a old phone with no service).   I hope this helps teach him responsibility for himself and gives him some real life practice on responsibility.  It took maybe 2 hours to program all the alarms the way he wanted (with songs he wanted to boot) but once again, it's a life skill to make plans and so it's good for him to learn it.  He also had to practice setting correct times (AM and PM make a big difference!) and labeling alarms.

We also started on Time for Learning program.   We're starting with 1st grade literature and 2nd grade Math to not overwhelm, with the goal of after getting the hang of the program working through it fairly quickly.

We did Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies today.  He liked that he could earn play time with games by doing work.  So that's a win.

The parent side I should be able to make lesson plans, get reports, and more so I look forward to playing with that side as we go along.

Today was a little loosy-goosy, but that's fine.  That's how I want it to be.  Eli needs to learn, but life skills are first and secondary is how to write a paper properly.

We also heard from his special needs scholarship that he's pending award! This is amazing as if we get it we'll be able to afford therapies, possibly a tutor, and all sorts of supplies/technology for him to use.  So prayers for that to come through and a great, relaxed year of learning ahead.
