The work of children
Part of the fundamental ideal behind "Unschooling" (which I technically am not doing) is letting children learn what they want, when they want, and how they want.
However, I am a control freak trying to learn to let go, Tilt into my son's brain wiring, and finding a happy place for us both!
Today was a great example! This morning Eli had his breakfast watching PBS kids shows- the Wild Kratts, Odd Squad, and Alexander Riddle and the secret museum. All educational shows and he was so excited when Alexander Hamilton was featured on one because he knows the name from his sister's love of musicals- especially Hamilton. After breakfast, we did some yoga together and took a mile run/walk. It was a hot one even early so there was complaining but it was done.
Next up, library time! We checked out books on cats (because we have a new kitten), and some fly guy books because they're fun. Then we participated in the libratory (not a typo) for many home school kids where we learned about volcanoes. The next few weeks we'll be building and then exploding our volcanoes! Eli's so excited!
We then worked on some workbook pages to review some first grade skills while still at the library.
Then on the way home, he had to read me some of his books in the car, including a joke book.
I was done for the day, but the work of a child is never done. He continued to watch some PBS shows, did some extra cross word puzzles, planned what he wanted to do tomorrow, and headed off to church class.
I feel like in one day, with little coercion from me, he more than made up for some of the busy times we didn't get to do as much.
Maybe we will make this work.
