Full week done! Getting a routine

Image
Week one done and pretty good!  No arguments against school work until Friday.  That's an amazing week in this differently wired house! Monday computer lessons was at grandma's house, but reading time happened at home.... Then we got creative with giant legos and balls on how to make a house with a ball pit! Tuesday and Wednesday computer and reading time, then some more creativity with legos buildings with only a minute to build them! Thursday just a normal school day...BUT I am SO SO proud of Eli for saying that 1st grade Language Arts is too easy for him!  He wants to move up to second grade level because it's too easy.  And it is.  I wanted to encourage Eli to work at where he thinks he's comfortable to start and his recognizing it's too easy and he can move on empowers him to be challenged and that it's a good thing.   Friday was a day of unschool learning shining through.  While exercising, we ended up talking about a friend with a blister on their foot an

New Year, New trials

So it's been awhile since I posted.  All summer we continued with a very relaxed unschooling with focusing on time, money and other life skills. Today was our first day "back to school" if you want to call it that when we never really stopped schooling the way we planned it.  We started the day with a grocery list- he wrote what I told him (I spelled most of it for him) while I was cooking dinner.  Today was different as we made a new schedule for the new year that includes school "time" and reading time and physical activity.    Eli being differently wired does better with schedules he gets to pick and control- so hopefully we'll do well with this since he got to make it.   His schedule involves a spreadsheet with time blocks and he set alarms on his "phone" (it's a old phone with no service).   I hope this helps teach him responsibility for himself and gives him some real life practice on responsibility.  It took maybe 2 hours to program all

Second grade almost done

I haven't posted for awhile- more important life activities going on.  Or people stealing my computer for streaming shows online.  Either way, we finished first grade and on track to finish second grade review this or next week.  Here's some highlights from work we've done.  Enjoy!

First grade finished!

We finally finished up the first grade work we had set aside today!    I've decided we've mostly mastered all the math concepts as he was able to do those independently. Weak areas in Literature include punctuation, verb tense, preposition use, and pronouns.  Things that are mostly understood but need a little more practice is capital letters, opposites, and possessive nouns. I've got a bunch of second grade resources flagged and printed and ready to go! We also did some science this week which I integrated a youtube video to listen/learn the order of the planets to complete a worksheet. That was a huge hit being on youtube! Here's some pictures of our work from the week- sometimes I forget. On to second!

Continued First grade review

Image
This week we've continued with the task of reviewing first grade material.  I'm doing this for a few reasons- 1- before the next official school year starts I want to know what he's missing from typical 1-3rd grade ciriculum and I'm happy to see most everything in first grade has been going well.  2- builds up his confidence in work that he's comfortable with.  This eases his stress and also mine! In addition at my parent's house and sometimes at ours he's spending time with making up and playing games that integrates math, writing or both.  We've also started work with chores and housework that he's responsible for to help gain lessons in that.  Here's some pictures of the last week's work. Next week we should finish up first grade, and then on to second!
